QUICK TIPS TO GETTING STARTED
With nearly 100 events posted every month, there’s something exciting for everyone. If you are brand new to VegasHikers – Welcome!! We’re excited to have you join us.
Before you try joining your first event, or if you have tried joining events, but haven’t been added, take a look at these tips to see if you have set up your profile and taken the steps needed for the organizer to add you to to the “Going” list.
Complete Your Profile
- Sign Up or Log In: Go to meetup.com/vegashikers and either create a new account or log in to your existing one.
- Complete Your Profile: Add information about yourself, including your hiking experience, interests, and any relevant medical information that the organizers should be aware of.
- Add a Profile Picture: Upload a clear photo of yourself so organizers and fellow hikers can recognize you at events.
***Unlike other types of groups (such as a dancing or business-oriented group), organizers read your profile. This is to help ensure you have the skills to complete the event you are signed up for or are on the wait list for.***
Read Description & Instructions
- Read the Full Event Details: Every hike has a detailed description outlining:
- Distance
- Difficulty level
- Terrain
- Meeting point
- Any special requirements (i.e. footwear, layers, bladder pack, etc).
- Note Important Instructions: Organizers often include critical directions, gear recommendations, and tips for staying safe. Follow these instructions closely to ensure you are prepared for the hike.
Arrange Transportation if needed (Limited Cell Reception)
If you don’t have your own vehicle:
- Arrange Transportation Ahead of Time: Many trailheads, including those in Calico Basin and other remote areas, have no cell phone reception. Make sure to coordinate your ride to and from the trailhead before heading out.
- Carpooling: If carpooling with fellow hikers, finalize meeting points and times in advance. Do not rely on being able to contact others once you arrive at the location.
- Directions: Download or print driving directions to the trailhead. GPS and mapping apps may not work in areas without service.
Gather Your Gear
- Pack essential gear (water, snacks, appropriate clothing).
👀👉🏼If you are going camping, backpacking, kayaking or other activities, make sure you have everything on the checklist the organizer provides. If unsure, reach out through Meetup direct messages, or the method the organizer provides in the event description.
Arrive On-Time & Ready to Go
Unless otherwise noted, the hike/event begins at the listed start time. It’s always better to arrive a bit early to get everything ready, especially if it is your first time meeting the group.
